What to Expect

Mae Tang is a district in the northern region of Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand. The landscape here is truly beautiful, home to mountainside villages and winding rivers snaking through dense forest. The Taeng River flows from the mountains of the Daen Lao Range in Wiang Haeng District, through neighbouring villages in the Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son Provinces and into the Ping River, one of the main tributaries of the Chao Phraya in Mae Taeng District, home of unforgettable trekking and nature.

What You Will Do

Day 1

Chiang Mai-Waterfall-Karen Hill Tribe Village

Depart from the hotel by truck, then stop at Mae Malai local market to purchase supplies for the trek. Stop at Mok Fah Waterfall for swimming and relaxation. In the afternoon, transfer by truck to Baan Pang Lun for a local lunch. Drive along the wild road to Huay Nam Dung National Park. Spend another two hours trekking to Baan Mae Jok, Karen village. Arrive and explore the village chitchatting with local people as well as joining local activities. Dinner and overnight at the village.

Day 2

Karen Hilltribe village-Karen Hilltribe village- Elephant bathing

Start trekking (approx. 4 hours) under the shade of green trees to Karen village, Bann Pang Khao Laam. Enjoy lunch at the village, where the guide will show his cooking skills by preparing lunch for the group. Next, take some time after lunch to walk around the village and soak in the local lifestyle. Feed the elephants and bathe with them in the river. Dinner and overnight at the village. There’s usually a campfire with some entertainment lead by the guide after dinner.

Day 3

Karen Hilltribe village- Bamboo raft- Chaing Mai

Breakfast at the village followed by very smooth bamboo rafting along the Mae Tang River for approximately two hours (depending on water level) to Lahu hilltribe village at Baan Pong Ngan. Take a short break to enjoy the view and visit the Lahu people in their village. Continue onwards downriver on the bamboo raft, passing through rapids for two hours to Shan village. After lunch at Shan village, transfer back to Chaing Mai by local truck and return to your hotel.

Hill tribe village

The verdant hills surrounding cosmopolitan Chiang Mai have long been dotted with hill tribe villages of Thailand’s many ethnic minorities. Visiting one or more of these rural outposts has become a quintessential Northern Thailand experience.

Our ‘CHIANG MAI AND MAE TANG TREK’ package includes:

  • • Two-night accommodation in a basic bamboo cottage at hill tribe village (Dormitory room with a basic mattress, mosquito net, no electricity)

  • • Entrance fees for National Park as per itinerary

Our ‘CHIANG MAI AND MAE TANG TREK’ package does NOT include:

  • • Alternative accommodation in Bangkok, though this can be arranged at additional cost upon request
  • • Visa fee/arrangements (if applicable)
  • • Any domestic or international flights
  • • Any alcoholic beverages
  • • Personal expenses such as laundry, telephone call, room service, mini bar, etc
  • • Personal health and travel insurance
  • • Gratuities/ tipping for driver and/or guide and porterage
  • • Any applicable High Season and Peak /Festive Season surcharge
  • • Any additional excursion/optional tours/activities that are not mentioned in the itinerary

Good to know

  • • Not suitable for those to travel with wheelchairs or walking gear
  • • Not suitable for children under the age of 4 and pregnant women.
  • • Operated daily, with 48 hours advanced reservation required (subject to availability of the hotels/resorts)
  • • Compulsory Christmas’s Eve dinner on December 24Th and New Year’s Eve dinner on December 31st (price varies depending on hotel policy – to be advised)
