Breaking News: Earthquake and Tsunami in Sulawesi
29 September 2018 | Written by Chris Alexander

Jakarta, 29th September 2018. Yesterday (28/9), the city of Palu in Sulawesi was hit by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, causing damage to buildings and infrastructure in the immediate vicinity. The initial quake was followed by a series of aftershocks in the region, which in turn led to a tidal wave. These tragic events have so far claimed 384 lives, mostly in the coastal areas of the town, where the tsunami struck.

Outside Palu, the popular tourist destinations of Makassar and Toraja are unaffected, and their airports are continuing to operate as normal. Damage assessment in the affected regions of Sulawesi is ongoing, and we are waiting for an official statement from the government and disaster management agency.

We can confirm that all Panorama Destination clients in Sulawesi have been accounted for and thankfully all are safe and well. Our team of guides and drivers in the region has also checked in to let us know they are ok. Rescue operations are underway in the affected zones, and we are doing all we can to help those in need.

We will keep monitoring the situation carefully and post updates as soon as new information becomes available.
