On Sunday, 29th July at 05:47 local time, the north-western region of Lombok was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale. The initial quake claimed at least 14 casualties, with more than 160 people known to have been injured. Numerous buildings, such as houses and schools, were damaged or destroyed in the immediate vicinity of the quake.
On Sunday, 5th August a second, even larger earthquake hit Lombok – this time with a magnitude of 7.0 – causing tremors that were felt in neighbouring Bali. Current reports confirm at least 91 casualties and more than 200 people seriously injured in the second disaster, with numbers expected to rise as rescue operations progress.
Thousands of people in Lombok have been left homeless due to the earthquakes, and local communities are in desperate need of medical care, along with basic supplies such as clothing, food, water and shelter. Many areas are currently without electricity and sanitation, whilst displaced families would benefit greatly from comfort items such as toys and books for the children. The Indonesian government is doing all it can to help those in need, but relief efforts are limited due to the sheer scale of the disaster. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has extended the emergency response period in all affected areas to 11th August.
It is for that reason that Panorama Destination has set up this page – to use our local network of workers, along with our international group of partners and contacts – to raise money for Lombok and ensure that it gets to where it needs to be.
