In a move that is expected to strengthen bonds between Indonesia and Vietnam, Vietjet has confirmed it will soon roll out a range of new flights connecting the capital cities of both ASEAN countries.

The new direct flights will begin daily operations from 20th December 2017. With the new routes, Vietjet will become the first low-cost carrier serving the Ho Chi Minh City-Jakarta route. The news makes Indonesia the 12th Asian country or territory in Vietjet’s existing network.

The new flight departs from Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 8:40 PM, followed by arrival at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 11:40 PM. The return flight then takes off at 1:40 AM and lands back in HCMC at 4:40 AM.

HE Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, made the announcement on at a recent event in Jakarta, which was also attended by Indonesia’s Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi.

Vietjet also commented that the new route would “meet increasing demand for travel between the two countries and boost regional trading and integration”.

“Since its inception, Vietjet has been developing friendly and professional flight services in operating key international routes, helping connect Vietnam’s main business and tourism hubs with foreign destinations, including Jakarta,” said Dinh Viet Phuong, Vietjet’s vice president.

“With its mission of making air travel approachable and possible for everyone and building a future in the air, Vietjet’s new route from HCMC to Jakarta will boost ties between these two economic, cultural, financial hubs, thus help boost regional trading and integration.”

This new connection with one of ASEAN’s powerhouse nations is expected to boost the number of inbound tourists to Indonesia.

Vietjet operates a route network covering destinations in more than 30 regional destinations across Thailand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, China, Japan, Hong Kong and Myanmar. The airline was named as one of the Top 500 Brands in Asia 2016 and “The Best Asian Low Cost Carrier” at the TTG Travel Awards 2015.
