Disney Settlement Opens Door to Super New Park
17 September 2019 | Written by Chris Alexander

After a protracted legal saga, Malaysia’s Genting Malaysia BHD’s outdoor theme park looks to be back on track. The project had been a source of dispute for a host of entertainment providers, including 21st Century Fox and Walt Disney Co.

The park, which is tentatively been called Genting Malaysia, has announced a filing with Bursa Malaysia, in which it confirms it is currently updating its development and construction plans to complete the outdoor theme park “utilising both Fox and non-Fox intellectual properties”. The declaration also states that, although a renaming of the project is imminent, it will go ahead as originally planned.

The news has led to speculation in Malaysia’s entertainments and hospitalities industries that the Genting theme park will showcase some popular characters from 21st Century Fox and the Marvel Universe – owned by Disney. Genting Malaysia had sought more than US$1 billion in damages in its suit against Fox, as the latter had terminated its participation in the theme park because Disney did not want to be associated with the gaming business.

Genting expects to open the park to the public in 2020.
