Travelodge Expands Malaysia Portfolio
19 February 2020 | Written by Chris Alexander

Travelodge Hotels Asia (TLA) has announced the opening of Travelodge Ipoh, taking the number of properties in their Malaysia portfolio to a total of four. TLA’s latest opening followed a rebrand and refurbishment of the former Heritage Hotel Ipoh, and is the first of several new projects slated for the coming years, as part of TLA’s expansion plans.

TLA, which independently owns and manages the Travelodge brand, has confirmed its commitment to the Malaysian hotel sector, with plans for a total of 15 hotels nationwide by 2025. The brand is looking to open new hotels in Kota Kinabalu, Melaka, Johor Bahru, and Kuching.

The first of these new projects to open its doors to the public, the 268-key Travelidge Ipoh offers rooms in five categories: Superior, Deluxe, Premier, Family Deluxe and Family Suite. Built with business travellers in mind, the hotel also features two meeting rooms, three ballrooms and a grand ballroom, along with a self-service laundromat, gym, multi-functional communal room and dining spaces.

“We are thrilled to kick off 2020 with the opening of our fourth Travelodge hotel in Malaysia in just under 18 months,” said Marcus Aw, who is TLA’s Managing Director. “Our entry into Ipoh is fuelled by our confidence in the city’s growth prospects to become one of the country’s top destinations in the coming years,” he added.

Travelodge Ipoh is located conveniently close to the city’s main business district and a range of popular tourist attractions, including Concubine Lane, Mural Art Lane, Perak Tong Cave Temple, Kellie’s Castle and Gua Tempurung.

TLA’s first Malaysian hotel, Travelodge Bukit Bintang, opened in 2018 and subsequently followed by two more in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. The company have identified Malaysia as a key destination for growth in the budget-conscious business traveller sector. With increased arrivals forecasted for the next few years, Marcus Aw sees the sky as the limit.

“We are very excited about our long-term prospects in this market. With four hotels and a strong infrastructure already in place, we have a great platform to accelerate our footprint and advance our growth ambitions across Malaysia,” he said.
