Bangkok has been awarded the title of Best City – International category at the Travel + Leisure India & South Asia ‘India’s Best Awards’, which are held annually and recognize success stories in the industry based on detailed and quantitative feedback from readers of the publication. The winners of the prestigious awards were announced at a ceremony in Delhi on 12th November 2018. In addition to Best City, Thailand was also voted the Best Honeymoon Destination (International).

“Bangkok is known the world over for its superb attractions, outstanding cuisine, excellent hospitality, friendly people, exemplary service standards and exceptional shopping outlets,” explained Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, who is Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. “Over the next few years, you will see even more positive changes and improvements in what is known as the “City of Life,” he added. The governor also extended his gratitude to the readers of Travel + Leisure India for their confidence and continued business with Thailand over many years.

India regularly accounts for more than one million annual visitors to Thailand. Over the first three quarters of 2018, a total of 1.17 million Indian visitors travelled to the Land of Smiles, representing an increase of 12% compared to the same period in the previous year. These arrivals generated an estimated 52.133 billion Baht in tourism revenue, up by 35%. TAT is projecting 1.5 million total arrivals from India in 2018.

Indian leisure travellers generally opt for shopping and sightseeing in popular urban hubs such as Bangkok and Pattaya, with many also choosing Phuket, Chiang Mai, Ko Samui, Chiang Rai, Krabi, Ayutthaya and Ko Chang (Trat) for beach breaks and historical tours. There has also been a marked increase in the number of Indian film-makers, MICE delegates, wedding parties and honeymooners choosing Thailand in recent years.

In addition to the awards from Travel + Leisure India & South Asia, Bangkok recently won the title of Number One city in the world in Mastercard’s 2018 Global Destination Cities Index, making this the third consecutive year the Thai capital has taken the top spot.
