What to Expect

This challenging trek takes you to Hang Tien, covering the two biggest caves in the Tu Lan cave system. The name ‘Hang Tien’ means ‘fairy cave’ in Vietnamese, and this name is an apt description of the otherworldly landscape you will discover on this trip. The cavernous entrance to the caves is truly awe-inspiring, featuring calcite formations and spectacular rock formations. The two-day trek includes a night camping by tranquil natural springs amid lush jungle vegetation, along with exploration of rocky terrain and natural pools. With great stargazing opportunities at night, and superb trekking during the day, this is an adventure that’s sure to live long in the memory.

Travel to Hang Tien, to discover the two largest dry caves in the region. You will trek to a basecamp for overnight stay in a campsite under the stars, before setting off to explore these two phenomenal cave systems in the middle of the jungle. Combining hikes over hills, into valleys and through two enormous caves, this two-day trek includes a night of camping next to tranquil natural springs amid lush jungle vegetation, along with exploration of rocky terrain and natural pools.

What You Will Do

Day 1

Phong Nha – Tan Hoa – Cao Quang

(-/L/D)

Following pickup from your hotel, you will be transferred by air-conditioned vehicle to the starting point of the trek. Begin with a steep uphill section that leads deep into the jungle. Next, some rocky sections take you over a ridge, then a similarly steep descent takes you into the valley. After 15 minutes or so, you will reach your campsite, where a natural swimming pool provides some refreshment after the long walk. Spend the evening stargazing and enjoying the remoteness of your wild surroundings.

Day 2

Hang Tien 1 – Hang Tien 2 – Tan Hoa – Phong Nha

(B/L/D)

Hike down the valley, then stop for lunch before entering the cave. Climb a 10-metre ladder (with a safety rope), then a short distance later you will see the far end of the cave. Continue into the jungle valley and trek for around 30 minutes to the second cave. Turn around and retrace your steps, before stopping to enjoy a picnic lunch. Hike back to the road for pickup and return transfer to the central office for a shower. Transfer to Phong Nha, arriving around 6pm.

Choice of accommodation

Good to know

  • • Bring 1 long (easy to dry) pants and 1 long-sleeved shirt to wear during the trek (quick dry)
  • • Bring 1 pair of shorts and t-shirt to wear at campsite, plus swimwear.
  • • Bring 1 pair of trekking boots/shoes – difficult terrain, good footwear necessary
  • • Bring 1 pair of flip flop (sandals) for campsite
  • • Bring a medium-size towel
  • • Bring 1 backpack to hold personal items
  • • Bring 2 pairs of calf-length densely woven socks (not ankle socks)
  • • Bring 1 change of clothes for after the tour
  • • Bring 1 set of camp clothes (shorts are okay for around camp; please bring a fleece in winter)
  • • Personal items: mosquito repellent, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, camera, underwear, toiletries
