A Look Ahead to Upcoming Events in 2022
05 March 2022 | Written by Chris Alexander

With various events, festivals and celebrations coming up in the month ahead, 2022 promises to be a bumper year for Indonesian tourism. As the archipelago prepares to welcome the world back, we take a look at some of the highlights coming up in the calendar.

MotoGP

This month, the 2022 MotoGp will take place at the Mandalika Circuit in Lombok, East Nusa Tenggara. The main event is scheduled for 18-20 March, although some riders have already had a chance to experience the highlights on offer in Lombok, during a familiarisation trip that took them around the island in February. Alex Rins, Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin and Aleix Espargaro visited some tourism sites and sampled the local cuisine, ahead of a test drive at the Mandalika from 11-13 February.

G20 Summit

Running from 1 December 2021 until the end of November 2022, the G20 Summit puts Indonesia front and centre on the world stage. Hosted in Bali, the ongoing summit will draw international visitors together from 20 countries, including 38 world leaders, 60 ministers and 6,000 members of the press, who will attend over 150 meetings. It all adds up to a positive and packed year for Indonesian tourism!

Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

From 23-28 May, Bali will host the Global Platform For Disaster Risk Reduction (GDRR); where 193 delegates from countries all over the world will discuss how to mitigate disasters and improve cooperation in case the worst happens. Created by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the event will provide an opportunity to showcase many of the heavenly attractions on offer in the Island of the Gods.

WCCE

Also held in Bali, the World Conference on Creative Economy (WCCE) provides a platform on which the importance of creative industries can be discussed. Drawing together researchers, policy makers and practitioners, WCCE 2022 will cover a wide range of topics, covering everything from new technologies and business solutions, to traditional knowledge and sustainable nature tourism.

World Tourism Day

Indonesia will be the official host of World Tourism Day 2022, celebrated on 27 September 2022. The news was made official at the 24th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), held in Madrid from 30 November to 3 December last year. Indonesia’s host status will draw extra attention to the nation’s many and varied tourism treasures, at a time when international travel is expected to be back in full swing.

From sporting events to global summits and celebrations, Indonesia will be the setting for some truly unforgettable experiences in the months ahead. With so much attention on the archipelago, the real winner will be Indonesia’s inbound tourism sector.
