Jakarta, Thursday, 9th August 4.00pm (WIB) – A third major earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Lombok just after midday today. The 6.2-magnitude tremor was centred approximately 6km off the northwestern shore but was powerful enough to cause damage to buildings inland.
The island had been reeling from a series of earthquakes that hit earlier in the week, causing more than 300 casualties. Aid workers in the region expect the number to climb higher still, as rescuers work their way through the rubble. The Gili Islands are currently closed, although there are reports that Sengiggi is recovering more quickly due the damage there being comparatively less severe.
Panorama Destination staff were placed at key locations around the island earlier this week, to help with the smooth evacuation of tourists from the island. All Panorama Destination clients have now been safely relocated to neighbouring Bali, and alternative arrangements have been made for their stay. We have been cooperating closely with overseas partners and local hotels to ensure the safety of all clients, and to relocate them as swiftly and smoothly as possible.
Panorama Destination personnel have stayed behind in Lombok to assess the damage and help with relief efforts. Our CEO, Renato Domini, is currently in Sembalun, where he has donated two water pumps and a generator to the local village to help with sanitation problems caused by the disaster. Panorama Destination is also setting up a fundraising campaign to raise money for the people of Lombok. To get in touch and make a donation, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
We would like to offer our heartfelt condolences and support to all those affected by the recent events in Lombok and are doing all we can to be of service in the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts. We will continue to update these pages with the latest news as soon as it becomes available; in case of emergency, you can contact our representatives in Bali and Lombok directly for more information.
