AirAsia Connects China to the Pearl of the Orient
16 January 2020 | Written by Chris Alexander

AirAsia is set to launch a series of new flights connecting Penang with Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province in China. Chengdu will become the thirteenth destination connected to Penang by AirAsia when the flights commence operations in March.

Starting 8th March 2020, the new flight schedule will operate three times a week, providing direct flights to one of Malaysia’s most popular holiday destinations.

“This is our first new route of the year, welcoming Visit Malaysia 2020 and in conjunction with Experience Penang 2020,” says Riad Asmat, CEO of AirAsia Malaysia. “Penang is one of our largest secondary hubs in peninsular Malaysia, to which we have flown more than 2.4 million guests to the island last year. This is our first route to the city from mainland China and we are confident it will boost visitor arrivals into Penang,” he continued.

Known as the Pearl of the Orient, Penang is a Malaysian island located in the Malacca Strait, just off the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia and separated from the mainland by the Penang Strait. The island is growing in popularity with international tourists, due to its rich blend of cultural, natural and historical attractions. The island’s city of George Town is Malaysia’s second largest city by population, home to many popular tourism hot spots, famous historic sites and charming streets.
