Hijau: Eco-Tourism Meets Retail Therapy
24 February 2021 | Written by Chris Alexander

Malaysia’s capital is revamping its retail tourism and recreation sector, with major new developments already underway at the Fahrenheit88 Shopping Mall in Kuala Lumpur. Designed to provide visitors with green-themed retail therapy in the post-pandemic tourism landscape, Hijau is an extensive retail project where people can work, relax and shop.

Hijau means ‘green’ in Malay, and the name is an indication of the ethos behind the project. It aims to attract savvy young urbanites, eco-conscious travellers and anyone in search of an oasis in the city, through the creation of a green enclave and a sanctuary of calm amid the busy thoroughfare of Bukit Bintang. Central to this tranquil ambiance and shopping experience is a garden landscape, interspersed with stores, installations and activity centres.

Pride of place in the new development project will go to BookXcess, set to become the largest bookstore in the Bukit Bintang area, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Fahrenheit88. The new flagship store will cover an area of 13,000 square feet, where visitors can explore an enormous selection of titles, covering everything from fiction, sci-fi & fantasy, to romance, self-help, children’s books and souvenirs.

“We are proud to announce BookXcess is the first retailer to be welcomed to Hijau,” said Dato’ Joyce Yap, who is the CEO of Retail for Fahrenheit88. “BookXcess will be a very suitable addition to the unique concept that Hijau presents and we cannot wait for shoppers to enjoy it in 2021,” she added.

Andrew Yap, who is Co-Founder of BookXcess, is equally excited about the new development, and the unique experience it can offer to visitors. “We are known for our innovative store design and we are always up for the challenge of developing unique store concepts,” he explains. This concept includes a curated corner that’s dedicated to fashion, design, architecture and art. “Our new store will perfectly complement what Hijau has to offer – a sanctuary and space for the community to converge, interact and shop with ease of mind,” added Yap.

To entertain city residents and returning travellers, BookXcess at Fahrenheit88 will host a calendar of activities, exhibitions and events, making it the centrepiece of learning and creativity in KL. Branded as a contemporary art space, the store offers KL visitors something new and special to explore, whether looking for an educational daytrip with children, or seeking some inspiration for travel reading on the journey ahead.

Situated in the heart of Bukit Bintang, Fahrenheit88 is a retail destination in KL that’s already popular with travellers in search of lifestyle, fashion and beauty. Targeted to open in Q2-Q3 2021 and spanning approximately 22,000 sq ft, Hijau provides a relaxing green space that features a mix of international, regional and home-grown brands.
