‘Take the Track by Storm’: Malaysia Gears Up For Grand Prix 2023
31 August 2023 | Written by Chris Alexander

Fifteen corners. Eight straights. Twenty-two riders reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h. It all adds up to an unforgettable weekend of full-throttle motorcycle action in Malaysia.

From 10-12 November, the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia returns to the world-renowned Sepang International Circuit (SIC) near Kuala Lumpur. The 24th edition of the race will be Round 19 in this year’s MotoGP™ calendar.

According to event organisers, the 2023 season brings “new machines, new rider line-ups, and teams ready to take the track by storm.” The event is a chance to witness the biggest names on two wheels, from Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia to Fabio Quartararo, Maverick Vinales and Jack Miller.

This year, there will be an added buzz at the SIC circuit, as local rider Syarifuddin Azman makes his professional debut in the Moto3™ class, riding with the MSI Team.

If last year’s race is anything to go by, the main event is not to be missed. In 2022, SIC welcomed 163,567 spectators from around the world, who watched Francesco Bagnaia and the Ducati Lenovo Team top the podium. That day, runner-up Enea Bastianini, set an all-time lap record time of 1’57.790, with a top speed of a blistering 339.6 km/h.

SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif recently affirmed his commitment to delivering the highest quality race experience, promising a jam-packed weekend of action to the thousands of visitors expected to make the trip.

Speaking at a recent media briefing in Sepang, Shafriman confirmed this year’s race will include a number of new attractions for race-goers to enjoy, including the all-new MotoGP format, a sprint race, riders parade and hero walk.

Other activities include the public pit lane walk and an autograph session with MotoGP riders on 10 November, when fans can get up close and personal with their favourite stars from the circuit.

The SIC is strategically located near KL International Airport and is just 30 minutes (85km) from Kuala Lumpur’s city centre.
