Centara: Supporting Education for Local Children
05 February 2020 | Written by Chris Alexander

In their on-going efforts to improve the lives and prospects of local communities, The Centara Grand Hua Hin has donated THB 150,000 (USD 4,932) to projects in remote areas. This includes a range of scholarships and educational resources for some of Thailand’s poorest children.

2020 is the eighth year in succession that Centara has shown such philanthropy. An annual scholarship ceremony at the resort is hosted to celebrate the success of initiatives in the local community, and reiterate the organisation’s support for development.

Held in the Colonial Hall at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, the event was hosted by David Martens, who is general manager and corporate director of operations in Hua Hin, Krabi, Samui and Vietnam at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin.

“We have been supporting the local community to improve early childhood education in Hua Hin,” explained Martens at the event. “This year, we have significantly raised scholarships for 50 students from four schools. Since 2012, the hotel has raised over THB 650,000 (USD 21,371) and continuously awarded over 400 scholarships,” he added.

During the event, local children were presented with academic scholarships, along with gifts such as bikes, radios, mobile phones, sports equipment and school uniforms.

As part of its continuing support for local education projects, the hotel has also partnered with Jamsai Publishing, to supply 500 brand-new books to school libraries and nurture students’ love of reading.

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin first opened in the early 1920s, at a time when the new railway line to Malaysia was transforming the sleepy fishing village of Hua Hin into Thailand’s first beach resort. Originally named the Railway Hotel, it was built along the classic lines of that era, and today is regarded as one of the grand hotels of the East.

Although the property has since been extended and renovated, the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin retains its air of that bygone age of elegance. Set on the beachfront, with a wide expanse of gardens perfect for strolling and enjoying the sea breezes, and with a prime town centre location ideal for exploring and shopping, the resort is a prime destination for couples and families.
