Day 2

Solo - Karanganyar - Solo

(D)

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel where you can also taste typical Javanese foods. At 07:00 hrs, embark on a full day excursion starting with a 90-minute scenic drive to Kemuning Tea Plantation passing various plantations. Named after a tropical plant that blooms all year round, this 438-hectare tea plantation is located on the scenic slopes of Mount Lawu, around 800 to 1,540 metres above sea level. Stroll around the tea plantation and interact with the friendly locals picking the best tea leaves, then proceed uphill by car to arrive at Candi Cetho complex located in Gumeng village.

Founded in the 15th century, this Hindu temple complex is situated at the elevation of 1,496 metres above sea level. The inscription in old Javanese letters on the gate as well as the symbols and statues inside indicate that the temple once served as a sacred place to achieve freedom from guilt or curses. Another temple to visit is Candi Sukuh – a 15th-century Hindu temple 910 metres above sea level at Berjo Village. Surrounded by pine forest, it was a place for sacred rituals which have gained popularity for their similarity to those at the Inca’s pyramid in Peru.

Both of these unique temples are considered to be controversial due to their different shapes compared to the usual Hindu temples, the three dimensional reliefs as well as the unusual stone or relic arrangements. The common misconception about the two temples is that they are considered as temples of erotica, however the reliefs actually tell a story, connected to a deeper meaning with higher philosophies about family values.

Drive afterwards to a nearby local restaurant overlooking the tea plantations and enjoy delicious Javanese cuisine while sipping your hot tea.Take in the scenery and relax before driving back towards the city with one last stop of the day that offers a perfect photo opportunity.

Jumog Waterfall is located in a secluded jungle enclave, 116 steps down a winding path through the foliage. Here you can enjoying the cool air, get back to nature and take some stunning photographs in front of the cascading river. There’s also a play area and pool for kids, or you can bathe in the invigorating spring waters.

Arrive back at the hotel in the late afternoon, the rest of the evening is free at your own leisure. Be pampered with a spa treatment at the hotel or opt to sample the local culinary delights by strolling along the street at Gladag Langen Bogan - more commonly known as Galabo (own arrangement under own personal expense).

Day 3

Solo Excursion

(D)

After breakfast, at 08:00 hrs you will be picked up at the hotel lobby. Head to Pasar Gede located in Solo’s Chinatown area. Explore the largest traditional market in the city brimming with large selection of fruits, snacks, herbs, spices, and fresh cooking ingredients.

Just a few steps away, step into a Chinese temple and be welcomed by the sweet scent of burning incense, where candles light up red lanterns. Built over 300 years ago, the temple is different to other Chinese temples as it is home to more than 13 shrines dedicated to different gods from Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian teaching. Today you will find an atmosphere of calm serenity and a warm welcome from the temple staff, some of whom may be available to tell fortunes using ancient Chinese face and palm-reading techniques.

Your excursion today continues to trace the city’s royal history. You will be escorted by licensed local guides at both royal palaces; Keraton Kasunanan and Pura Mangkunegaran. The 18th-century Keraton Kasunanan was the royal family’s residence built in 1745 by King Pakubuwono II and today is a museum of heirlooms. Dominated by pale white and light blue colours, it has a tall tower in the complex which is still used only by the King as private meditation space. The shape of the tower indicates a strong kinship with the Chinese while the blue color refers to the solemnity in meditation.

Stretching around 11 hectares, Pura Mangkunegaran is decorated with Italian marble tiles, lion statues from Berlin and chandeliers originating from the Netherlands. The architecture is strongly influenced by European design. Stroll around escorted by one of the palace’s own experienced guides and hear tales of the royal family. No documentation is allowed in the inner courtyard but your resourceful local guide will fill you in on anecdotes and interesting stories from the past.

After lunch at a local restaurant with rich Javanese architecture, a short walk will take you to Triwindu Antique Market. Explore the two-storeys market filled with shops selling antiques and curiosities. Do not hesitate to bargain and politely reject with a smile if you are not interested in buying.
