Sanur: Bali’s Health and Wellness Hub

Known for its laid-back charm and relaxed coastal atmosphere, Sanur is entering an exciting new chapter. Located on Bali’s southeastern coastline, this elegant beachside destination has long attracted travellers seeking a quieter and more refined alternative to the island’s busier tourism hubs. Now, with major new developments in wellness, hospitality and marine tourism, Sanur is rapidly emerging as one of Bali’s most dynamic lifestyle and travel destinations.

Unlike some of Bali’s more energetic resort areas, Sanur has retained a distinctly relaxed character. Calm beaches, sunrise views over the Lombok Strait and a charming beachfront promenade continue to define daily life here. The destination remains particularly popular with families, wellness travellers and visitors seeking a slower pace, while its cafés, boutiques and seaside restaurants create an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and authentically Balinese.

Today, Sanur is becoming a focal point for one of Indonesia’s most ambitious tourism initiatives: the Sanur Special Economic Zone (SEZ), the country’s first integrated health and wellness tourism hub. Spanning more than 41 hectares, the development combines international-standard healthcare facilities with hotels, wellness centres, convention facilities and cultural spaces, positioning Bali as a future leader in medical and wellness tourism.

At the heart of this transformation is the newly operational Bali International Hospital, which opened in 2025 and is already attracting both Indonesian and international patients. Developed through partnerships with leading global medical institutions, the hospital offers specialised services in cardiology, oncology, neurology, orthopaedics and wellness care, while also becoming one of the first facilities in Indonesia permitted to employ foreign medical specialists directly within the SEZ framework.

Yet despite these modern developments, Sanur’s appeal remains deeply connected to its cultural identity and coastal lifestyle. Traditional fishing boats still line sections of the shoreline, local temples remain active community centres and morning walks or cycling along the beachfront path remain among the destination’s simple pleasures. Sanur also serves as a convenient gateway to nearby islands such as Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, making it an ideal base for travellers looking to combine relaxation with exploration.

Luxury hospitality is also playing an increasingly important role in Sanur’s evolution. Landmark properties such as the newly reimagined Meru Sanur and Bali Beach Hotel are helping to elevate the area’s profile, while new convention and MICE facilities are positioning the destination to attract international events and business travellers alongside leisure tourism.

Importantly, Sanur’s transformation reflects broader shifts in global travel trends. Wellness tourism, preventative healthcare and longer-stay lifestyle travel continue to grow rapidly worldwide, and Bali is seeking to position itself at the forefront of these sectors. By combining healthcare, wellness, hospitality and Balinese culture in one integrated destination, Sanur is offering a model that feels both contemporary and distinctly local.

For travellers, the result is a destination that offers far more than beaches alone. Whether visiting for wellness retreats, cultural experiences, family holidays or simply a quieter side of Bali, Sanur continues to stand out for its balance of tradition, comfort and thoughtful development. As Bali’s tourism landscape evolves, Sanur is proving that growth and authenticity can still go hand in hand.
