Greetings from Ho Chi Minh City! 

As summer begins, Vietnam’s calendar comes alive with vibrant cultural celebrations and meaningful seasonal experiences, offering travellers a deeper connection to local traditions and everyday life. One of the most significant moments is Vesak, or the Buddha’s Birthday, typically observed in late May or early June. Celebrated nationwide, particularly in major pagodas across Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City, this important Buddhist occasion brings a serene atmosphere of lantern-lit ceremonies and prayer rituals, providing a rare and memorable cultural experience for visitors. 

Across the country, early summertime also reveals Vietnam at its most dynamic. In Da Nang, the International Fireworks Festival lights up the Han River on select evenings from May to July, combining world-class performances with the city’s coastal energy. Meanwhile in the north, the “falling water” season transforms the rice terraces of Sa Pa into shimmering, mirror-like landscapes as farmers prepare for planting. This is one of the most visually striking times to visit, closely tied to the agricultural rhythms of local ethnic communities. 

This season naturally draws travellers to both the coast and the mountains. From island escapes such as Phu Quoc and Con Dao to beach favourites like Cam Ranh, Nha Trang, Mui Ne and Da Nang, Vietnam offers a diverse range of seaside experiences. For those seeking cooler climates and a slower pace, the northern highlands around Sa Pa or the peaceful valleys of Mai Chau provide a refreshing contrast. Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting guests from New Zealand who explored the Cao Dai Temple and the Cu Chi Tunnels, gaining an unforgettable insight into Vietnam’s rich spiritual and historical heritage. 

May carries a distinct feeling in Vietnam; the heat, the sound of cicadas and bursts of crimson blooms signalling the start of summer. It is a time that inspires spontaneous travel, whether escaping to the highlands or embracing the vibrant contrasts between destinations like Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. In today’s tourism landscape, we see a growing desire for experiences that feel authentic and grounded; from the quiet charm of Hoi An to the warm hospitality found along the coast, it is these genuine connections with people and place that leave a lasting impression.
