Cao Bang, Untouched Northern Wonder

Far beyond Vietnam’s busy urban centres and beach destinations, the mountainous province of Cao Bang is quietly emerging as one of the country’s most rewarding travel experiences. Located near the Chinese border in Vietnam’s far north, this spectacular region is gaining international recognition for its dramatic limestone landscapes, authentic cultural encounters and community-based tourism initiatives rooted in sustainability.

At the heart of the destination lies the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark, a vast protected landscape recognised by UNESCO for its extraordinary geological heritage and cultural significance. Spanning more than 3,000 square kilometres, the geopark is home to towering karst mountains, winding rivers, ancient caves and some of Vietnam’s most breathtaking natural scenery.

Among its most iconic attractions is Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the world’s largest transnational waterfalls, where turquoise waters cascade through lush forest along the Vietnam–China border. Nearby, visitors can explore the immense Nguom Ngao Cave, cruise across the tranquil Thang Hen lake system, or journey through remote valleys scattered with traditional Tay and Nung villages.

What truly distinguishes Cao Bang, however, is its atmosphere of authenticity and hospitality. In 2026, the province was named among Vietnam’s “Top 10 Most Welcoming Destinations” in the Traveller Review Awards by Booking.com, reflecting the growing reputation of its homestays and community-led tourism experiences. Travellers are increasingly drawn not only by the scenery, but by opportunities to share meals with local families, visit highland markets and experience traditions preserved across generations.

The region is also becoming an important model for sustainable tourism development in Vietnam. Conservation efforts within the geopark support biodiversity protection, heritage preservation and local livelihoods, while encouraging low-impact tourism that benefits ethnic minority communities. Researchers have identified Cao Bang as one of Vietnam’s most promising destinations for geotourism and eco-cultural travel, with increasing international interest in its carefully managed development approach.

For travellers seeking a deeper and more immersive side of Vietnam, Cao Bang offers something increasingly rare in Asia: a destination that still feels undiscovered. Whether exploring mist-covered mountain passes, staying in traditional stone villages or watching the sunrise over emerald valleys, visitors to Cao Bang encounter a slower, more meaningful style of travel; one defined not by crowds, but by connection, culture and extraordinary natural beauty.
