August brings Thailand’s lush green season, when the country’s landscapes are at their most vibrant and visitors can experience a different side of the Kingdom. While brief tropical showers are typical during this time of year, they are often short-lived and followed by sunshine, creating ideal conditions for exploring Thailand’s rich natural beauty, cultural treasures and renowned hospitality. 

This month, Thailand observes Mother’s Day on 12 August, a national public holiday that also commemorates the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. Across the country, visitors will find temples, public buildings and communities adorned with blue decorations, while ceremonies and cultural activities provide a meaningful insight into one of Thailand’s most important annual celebrations. 

Our destination highlight for August is Chiang Mai, where the rainy season transforms the surrounding mountains into a spectacular green landscape. It is the perfect time to enjoy trekking through lush forests, white-water rafting, refreshing waterfalls and ethical elephant observation experiences, all while experiencing the region’s distinctive Lanna culture. For travellers looking to venture beyond the well-trodden tourist trail, we also recommend Nakhon Sawan, a charming gateway to northern Thailand. Here, visitors can discover Bueng Boraphet, Thailand’s largest freshwater lake and a haven for birdwatching, before ending the day with panoramic sunset views from Wat Khiriwong.
