Destination Digest: Vietnam News in Brief

There’s plenty of good news coming out of Vietnam at the moment. Here are a few stories making the headlines:

Vietnam approaches 16 million international arrivals as inbound growth accelerates

Vietnam welcomed 15.9 million international visitors in the first 8 months of 2026, up 14.4% year-on-year. August was particularly strong, with nearly 2 million arrivals, an increase of 18.4% year-on-year despite traditionally being part of the international low season. Vietnam has now achieved 63.6% of its ambitious 25 million international visitor target for 2026.

European and other long-haul markets record particularly strong growth

The headline arrival figures also reveal significant diversification in Vietnam’s source markets. European arrivals reached around 2.68 million during January–August, up 53.4%, while visitors from the Americas increased 20.7% and Oceania 23.3%. Asia remains dominant, accounting for around 74% of international arrivals, but the rapid expansion of long-haul markets is encouraging for operators offering higher-value and longer multi-destination itineraries. Air travel accounted for 83% of all international arrivals.

Vietnam’s rail journeys gather momentum as tourism experiences

Rail travel is becoming an increasingly distinctive part of Vietnam’s tourism offering. Hanoi’s Five City Gates heritage train carried nearly 100,000 passengers in its first year, combining sightseeing with cultural performances, local cuisine and storytelling. At the luxury end, The Vietage by Anantara offers premium rail journeys through Central Vietnam, including connections between Nha Trang and Quy Nhon. Most recently, Ninh Binh began trials of a 14-carriage premium tourist train from Hanoi, integrating onboard dining with visits to the province’s heritage attractions. Together, these experiences point to growing opportunities for rail to become part of the attraction itself, rather than simply a means of getting around.

Vietnam sets sights on 45–50 million international visitors by 2030

On 10 September, the government announced a major new tourism development programme targeting 45–50 million international visitors annually by 2030, with tourism revenue of US$80–90 billion and a contribution of 10–12% of GDP. The strategy calls for Vietnam to move towards higher-quality, higher-value and more sustainable tourism, while strengthening its international competitiveness. Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang are identified as major tourism growth poles, with Phu Quoc being developed as an additional growth hub.
