From 20–26 September 2026, the northeastern province of Sakon Nakhon will come alive for one of its most colourful traditional celebrations. The Bun Duean Sip, Traditional Long Boat Race, Lai Ruea Fai and Phra Kaeo Worship Festival brings seven days of racing, illuminated boats, religious traditions, food and entertainment to Akat Amnuai District.
For international visitors, the festival provides a fascinating introduction to the traditions of Isan, Thailand’s culturally distinctive northeast. Rather than a spectacle created for tourists, Bun Duean Sip is rooted in local beliefs and community life, with traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Racing on the Yam River
Among the liveliest highlights are the traditional long boat races, held on the Yam River. Crews compete in several categories, creating an energetic atmosphere along the riverbanks as local communities gather to support the paddlers.
Previous editions have included men’s and women’s long boat competitions, alongside youth, fishing boat and special small-boat categories. The races are accompanied by traditional cultural performances reflecting the heritage of the local Tai Yoi community.
The festival is traditionally associated with the full moon of the tenth lunar month. Local authorities regard it as an important means of preserving regional traditions and passing cultural knowledge between generations.
When the river lights up
As darkness falls, another highlight takes centre stage: Lai Ruea Fai, when illuminated boats create a spectacular procession on the river. The tradition has a deeper significance than its visual appeal. Local government documentation explains that the procession is intended to pay respect and ask forgiveness of the Yam River, the waterway that has long sustained surrounding communities.
Religion is another important part of the celebrations. Worship of the revered Phra Kaeo at Wat Klang Phra Kaeo forms part of the festival’s traditions, with participants paying their respects for good fortune.
Throughout the seven-day event, visitors can also browse local products, sample regional food and enjoy concerts by popular Thai performers.
