Indonesia targets 19.1 million visitors in 2027  

Indonesia has announced ambitious tourism growth targets for 2027, aiming to attract up to 19.1 million international visitors and generate as much as US$28.6 billion in tourism revenue. To achieve this, the government plans to invest in sustainable tourism development, enhance destination quality, strengthen tourism marketing and improve industry capacity across the country. The sector is expected to play an increasingly important role in the national economy, supporting job creation, attracting investment and boosting foreign exchange earnings, while flagship destinations such as Bali, Lake Toba, Borobudur and Labuan Bajo continue to drive international interest.

Tourism Village initiative continues to boost tourism  

Indonesia’s Tourism Village programme continues to deliver strong results, with the government reporting significant growth in visitor numbers, local incomes and community participation. The number of registered tourism villages has increased to more than 6,200 nationwide, while the 50 villages recognised through the 2024 Indonesian Tourism Village Awards welcomed over 2.3 million visitors in 2024 — a 44.8% increase compared to the previous year. Tourism revenues in these communities have also risen steadily, reaching nearly IDR 60 billion in 2025. The government views tourism villages as a key driver of sustainable and inclusive economic growth, helping rural communities preserve local culture, create jobs and share the benefits of tourism more widely across Indonesia.

Tourism ministry develops five flagship programmes  

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism is continuing to advance five flagship programmes designed to support inclusive growth and sustainable tourism development across the country. The initiatives focus on improving travel safety, promoting quality tourism, strengthening the Event by Indonesia programme, developing tourism villages and embracing digital innovation through Tourism 5.0. Particular emphasis is being placed on regional events, with the Event by Indonesia programme continuing to attract millions of visitors and deliver significant economic benefits nationwide.

Indonesia prioritises sustainable tourism growth  

Despite significant budget reductions planned for 2027, Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable tourism development as a key driver of economic growth. While the ministry’s indicative budget will decrease by nearly 30%, with tourism programmes facing some of the largest cuts, the government intends to maintain its focus on destination quality, community empowerment and long-term sustainability. Officials emphasised that tourism remains a strategic sector for generating jobs, attracting investment and supporting local economies, with efforts continuing to promote tourism villages, improve visitor experiences and ensure that the benefits of tourism are shared more widely across communities.
