International arrivals rise as Malaysia extends Visit Malaysia campaign into 2027

Malaysia recorded 21.1 million international visitor arrivals from January–June 2026, up 2.5% year-on-year. The government has now extended the Visit Malaysia campaign through 2027, with Tourism Malaysia targeting 47 million international tourist arrivals and seeking additional funding to sustain overseas promotion. The strategy also includes diversifying beyond established attractions, with 108 new packages covering education, gastronomy and agrotourism.

Malaysia Airlines launches direct Fukuoka–Kuala Lumpur flights

On 3 September, Malaysia Airlines inaugurated a new direct service between Fukuoka and Kuala Lumpur, strengthening Malaysia’s access to the Japanese market, particularly Kyushu. Tourism Malaysia says the connection will support Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 and provide a new gateway for Japanese travellers. The route is particularly relevant for inbound operators looking to develop Japan as a source market beyond the traditional Tokyo and Osaka catchments.

Malaysia strengthens Middle East connectivity and tourism partnerships

Malaysia is expanding its tourism push across the UAE and wider GCC, following high-level meetings with airlines and travel companies in Dubai from 13–17 September. Tourism Malaysia has signed agreements with Emirates and Qatar Airways covering joint marketing and tourism promotion, while discussions also involved Air Arabia, Gulf Air, Etihad Airways and major Middle Eastern travel agencies. The initiative is intended to rebuild momentum from the region and strengthen Malaysia’s access to the valuable Middle Eastern inbound market.

Chinese travel demand strengthens ahead of Golden Week

Malaysia is seeing encouraging growth from one of its most important source markets. Malaysia Airlines expects to carry more than 52,000 passengers across its China network during the 2026 Golden Week period, up 21% year-on-year. The airline carried more than 600,000 passengers on China routes in H1 2026, up 27%, and now serves nine gateways following the restoration of Chengdu services and introduction of daily flights to Shenzhen and Changsha. Sabah is also benefiting: Chinese arrivals to the state increased 25.5% during the first seven months of 2026.
