Malaysia targets 45 million visitors in 2025

Malaysia is setting its sights on welcoming 45 million international visitors in 2025, marking a bold and strategic leap forward in its tourism ambitions. This target reflects a 10% increase from the previous year, fuelled by significant growth from key markets, especially China and India. The introduction of a 30-day visa-free entry policy for citizens of these countries, alongside enhanced tourism infrastructure and government support, has played a crucial role in this surge. As a result, Malaysia is not only aiming to recover but to surpass pre-pandemic tourism levels, with the influx from China and India expected to be the primary drivers of this impressive growth.

Bold new tourism campaign improves access to attractions in Penang

Penang Global Tourism has launched a bold new campaign, “Not the Penang You Know,” aimed at giving travellers easier and more exciting access to Penang’s rapidly expanding list of attractions. By promoting improved connectivity—such as the upcoming Hatyai–Butterworth train service and 40 weekly direct flights—and highlighting lesser-known destinations like Bertam Resort, Design Village and the Penang History Gallery, the initiative repositions Penang as a diverse and easily accessible getaway. This strategic push invites tourists to explore a modern, multifaceted Penang beyond its traditional offerings.

New visa free policies strengthen connections between Malaysia, China and ASEAN

As of April 2025, a significant development in international travel has been announced, impacting travellers between China and Malaysia. The extension of the visa-free travel agreement between these two countries, finalised during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Malaysia in mid-April, promises to reshape tourism dynamics not only in Malaysia but across the Southeast Asian region. This extension will provide citizens of both nations the privilege of staying in each other’s countries for up to 90 days without needing a visa. The new arrangement, set to last 5 years with the possibility of renewal, is seen as a powerful catalyst for tourism, offering numerous opportunities for travellers and industries alike.
