International Tourist Arrivals Up 20 Percent  

Malaysia has recorded a 20 per cent increase in international tourist arrivals, compared to the same period in 2024. The tourism ministry said 16.9 million international tourist arrivals were recorded from January to May of this year. About half of Malaysia’s total international tourist arrivals during the first five months of the year were from neighbouring Singapore, with 8.34 million visitors, followed by Indonesia at 1.82 million, China at 1.81 million, and Thailand at 1.06 million, the ministry said in a written parliamentary reply on 21 July.

These countries have seen an increase of 16.6% and 8.7% respectively in their contributions to Malaysia’s tourism sector compared to the same period in 2024. Long-haul travellers from these regions are typically attracted by Malaysia’s cultural offerings, natural beauty, and vibrant cities, which provide a diverse range of experiences that appeal to both adventure seekers and those looking for a more relaxed vacation.

Malaysia and Sri Lanka Strengthen Tourism and Cultural Ties  

Malaysia and Sri Lanka have reaffirmed their strong bilateral relations through a recent high-level meeting held in Malacca between Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath and Tun Mohd Ali Rustam, Governor of Malacca. The discussions reflected the shared commitment of both nations to strengthen cooperation in key sectors such as tourism, cultural exchange, education, and investment, with a particular focus on promoting heritage and religious tourism.
