Leafy, historic and refreshingly laid-back, Taiping offers a very different side of Malaysia. Located in the northern state of Perak, this former tin-mining town combines colonial heritage, beautiful gardens and rainforest-covered hills with an easy-going atmosphere that rewards travellers who venture beyond the country’s more familiar destinations.
Taiping played an important role in the development of modern Malaysia. Once the capital of Perak, the town grew rapidly following the discovery and expansion of tin mining in the surrounding Larut district. Today, its streets, traditional shophouses and historic buildings provide reminders of this prosperous past.
Taiping is also known as Malaysia’s ‘town of many firsts’. Among its pioneering landmarks are the country’s first museum, first railway and first public gardens, while the town later became home to Malaysia’s first zoo. A garden in the heart of town

Beyond the museum, a walk through the old town reveals traditional shophouses and architecture shaped by Chinese, Malay and European influences. Taiping was also connected to Port Weld – now Kuala Sepetang – by Malaysia’s first railway line, which opened in 1885 to transport tin from the mines to the coast.
Another poignant reminder of Taiping’s past can be found at the Taiping War Cemetery, the final resting place of Allied servicemen who died during the Second World War.
Into the hills
Rising above town is Bukit Larut, formerly known as Maxwell Hill. Developed as a colonial hill station in the late 19th century, Bukit Larut is surrounded by forest and offers cooler temperatures, abundant birdlife and sweeping views over the surrounding landscape.
