Introducing: Sabah’s New Community Tourism Initiative

Sabah continues to strengthen its position as one of Malaysia’s most compelling nature-based destinations with the launch of Sarayo Tourism; a new community-driven initiative in Kampung Tampasak, Penampang. Developed alongside the Sopuk Recreational Park, this grassroots tourism product reflects a growing movement across East Malaysia to place local communities at the heart of sustainable travel experiences.

Set amidst lush greenery and clear flowing rivers, Sarayo offers visitors a tranquil retreat into rural Sabah, where nature and culture are deeply intertwined. The initiative is led by local residents and supported by Koperasi Tampasak Penampang Berhad, with the aim of generating sustainable income while preserving the village’s natural and cultural heritage.

At its core, Sarayo Tourism is designed to provide an immersive, low-impact experience. Visitors can explore the surrounding river landscapes via jetty-accessed excursions, offering a closer look at the region’s rich biodiversity and scenic beauty. For those seeking a deeper cultural connection, the destination features traditional “sulap stay” accommodations; simple, village-style lodgings that allow guests to experience local lifestyles, customs and hospitality first-hand.

This approach aligns with Sabah’s broader tourism strategy, which increasingly prioritises community-based and eco-tourism models. Rather than large-scale developments, initiatives like Sarayo focus on empowering local communities, ensuring that economic benefits remain within rural areas while safeguarding the environment. Government support has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life, with funding allocated to enhance infrastructure and support local entrepreneurship, further strengthening the initiative’s long-term sustainability.

Penampang itself holds a unique cultural significance within Sabah, as a centre of Kadazan-Dusun heritage. Visitors to the area can complement their Sarayo experience with insights into local traditions, cuisine, and festivals, including the renowned Kaamatan harvest celebrations held annually in May. This rich cultural backdrop enhances the appeal of community tourism, offering travellers not only scenic landscapes but also meaningful cultural engagement.

Sarayo Tourism is particularly well-suited to families, small groups, and organisations seeking a peaceful escape from urban environments. Its accessibility by road makes it an attractive addition to broader Sabah itineraries, whether as a standalone retreat or as part of a wider exploration of Kota Kinabalu and the surrounding region.

As travellers increasingly seek authentic, responsible, and experience-driven journeys, initiatives like Sarayo highlight the future direction of tourism in Malaysia. By connecting visitors directly with communities, landscapes, and traditions, Sabah is creating travel experiences that are not only memorable, but also impactful—supporting livelihoods while preserving the very environments that make the destination so special.
